Why Keto?
The Keto Diet, or ketogenic diet, is a diet that’s been around for well over 100 years. This is a diet that’s very well known for being low-carb, where the body is forced into a state called ketosis and essentially uses fat as the primary fuel source.
Medically, it has been used to treat a myriad of disease and ailments including Type 2 diabetes, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, neurological disease, and even cancer. Scientifically speaking, it has been around for millions of years and was the way we ate to evolve as a species, becoming the people we are today.
Glucose is the easiest molecule for your body to convert and use as energy so that it will be chosen over any other energy source. Since the glucose is being used as a primary energy source, your fats are not needed and are therefore stored. Typically on a normal, higher carbohydrate diet, the body will use glucose as the main form of energy. By lowering the intake of carbs, the body is induced into a state known as ketosis, whereby ketones produced in the liver are used as the preferred energy source.
There are many benefits to eating ‘Keto’ however, the most common, is by far and away the weight loss associated with such a diet.

Meat
Dieters often give up fatty steaks and pork for leaner cuts of meat like chicken breast. But people on the ketogenic diet embrace a high-fat, low carb lifestyle, meaning those greasy eats are never off limits!
Veggies
What vegetables are best on a keto diet? There’s a simple rule:
Above ground vegetables are generally lower carb and therefore the best keto options. Below ground vegetables, a.k.a. root vegetables, contain more carbs and should be consumed with care, especially potatoes and sweet potatoes. Also it is vitally important to eat organically if possible as these vegetables retain the nutrients and minerals of the soil they were grown in.
Dairy
Dairy is commonly consumed in tandem with meals on keto. Try to keep your dairy consumption to a moderate level. Most of your meals should be coming from protein, vegetables, and added fats/cooking oils. Make sure to choose full fat products over fat-free or low-fat as they will have significantly more carbs and less “filling” effects. If you have lactose sensitivities, stick with very hard and long-aged dairy products as they contain much less lactose.
